The Thousand Palms Oasis is relatively flat, ideal for young kids. But because this is the desert, bring plenty of water, a hat, snacks, and sunscreen. There are better times to bring the kids.

• Thousand Palms: The name of the largest of the palm oases says it all. Although in 1865 it was known as Hundred Palms, by the 1890s, that number had increased to warrant the name Thousand Palms. This oasis featured not only many palms but also a large pond on the north end. In 1919, desert wanderer and chronicler J. Smeaton Chase remarked.
